The Walmart Scholarships aim of the PhD student work is to develop well and suitable simulation models of the electric drive and battery system for integration with the mechanical and safety systems in hybrid electrical vehicles. Also utilize the models (standard for engine, electric drive and battery system) transformed to an automotive context to simulate energy balance and transient fault conditions. The models should be suitable for a co-simulation of a premium “2017-state-of-the-art low volume production car” with “Green, Safe & Connected”-functionality ready for high volume production year 2020.

The PhD Walmart Scholarships student will use electric machine and power electronic design tools as well as modelling, control and optimisation methods to study the system. A laboratory set up of the system will be developed during the project.

The research will be conducted in close cooperation with Volvo Cars and other involved research groups.

The PhD position also involves taking part in the department’s undergraduate education.

The Victor Pinchuk Foundation provides scholarships for Ukrainian students begin a master's degree at the School of Environment and Development in September 2011.

The grants are used to finance up to 60% of the total cost of the study (up to U.S. $ 50,000). Students are expected to cover the rest of their expenses or contributing personal funds or by seeking alternative funding sources. The amount of subsidy will depend on individual student needs and merit and performance.

2) Brain Connectivity and Cognitive Function in Healthy and Accelerated Aging
Spontaneous activity in the brain is organized in characteristic network patterns, that may each be associated with specific functions and as well as with performance in mental or motor tasks. In the present study we will use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate spontaneous brain networks in a large cohort of middle-aged men, with or without signs of early cognitive impairment. Applicants should have a background in biology or medicine, a documented interest in the human brain and preferably publications in the neuroscience area. The project forms part of the research program 1b led by Professor Martin Lauritzen. The place of work is at the Glostrup Hospital.

3) Connective Tissue in Tendon and Skeletal Muscle with Aging: Importance of Insulin-like Growth Factor I (IGF-I).Age-associated loss of muscle mass, connective tissue and function is understood well. The study focuses on the role of insulin-like growth factor I for synthesis of skeletal muscle and connective tissue in relation to ageing. This will be studied in a model of short-term immobilization and subsequent rehabilitation in both young and old individuals. 5) Diabetes Research Communication and the Changing Identities of Type 2 Diabetes Patients, 1960-2010
The aim of the project is to investigate how the identity of diabetic patients has changed in the course of the last half century, from the 1960s, when research communication was largely restricted to short consultations between authoritative doctors and compliant patients supported by leaflets and other printed material, to the the current situation, where the identity of the competent type 2 diabetes patient is constructed in a complex research communicative landscape populated by a variety of communicating actors, including the national health care system, pharmaceutical and medical device companies and active patient organizations. The project is part of research program 5 led by Associate Professor Lene Otto and Medical Museion´s new program for health science communication led by Professor Thomas Soderqvist.

PhD Qualifications, Conditions, and Procedure
The successful applicant must hold a Masters degree or have submitted the thesis, which should be approved before employment. Relevant course work, previous research, and practical experience should be described. The applicant should have a high level of academic achievement within the chosen field and should also have the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

The grant is for a three year stipend under condition that the project is accepted for the PhD study course at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Copenhagen.

The position is 3-yearly and is carried in accordance with "Aftale mellem AC og Finansministeriet om lønnede ph.d.-stipendiater" (Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) on salaried scholarships). If you search the Internet long enough you are bound to find some really smart scholarships and some pretty silly scholarships too. Okay, maybe not exactly silly, just some wacky scholarships that don’t quite seem like they should be classified as a scholarship. However stupid or not these so called silly scholarships are for real and they actually deliver valuable smart scholarship money to those who meet their unusual criteria. So before you turn your nose up at these stupid scholarships give them the once over and make completely sure that they cannot lend you a helping hand in your pursuit of post high school education. Let’s examine a few of these smart, goofy scholarships.

Let’s start with The Duck Brand Duct Tape “Stuck At Prom” Contest. Believe it or not, you read it right. As goofy as it sounds you can win $3000 towards your college education along with a bit of pocket money for school as well. All you and your date have to do is attend your high school prom in a duct tape costume you designed. Then you take pictures and send them to the duct tape website. They will choose 10 finalists. Those who visit the site and give them the most votes will determine the winning couple. You must submit your photos to silly scholarships no later than June 8th of the contest year. Voters will judge the couples on originality, workmanship, accessories, colors and the amount of duct tape utilized. This may be one wacky scholarship contest but if you win you may think otherwise when you accept the money!

Just when you thought you had heard everything along comes the Frederick and Mary F. Beckley Scholarship for Left-Handed Students. No, this is not going to be a ‘left-handed monkey wrench’ story. If you are a senior, junior or sophomore enrolled in Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, have sound academic scores, display financial need and oh yes, be left-handed your a candidate for this strange scholarship. Silly, maybe but you can win a smart scholarship of up to $5,000 just for being left handed. Winning the $5,000 scholarship may not seem so dumb once you deposited it in your bank account though. The next application deadline will be April 1, 2010.

Being tall is good for something else other than playing basketball and picking apples off trees. The Tall Clubs International Scholarship offers a $1,000 scholarship. The somewhat stupid part is that a female has to stand 5 feet 10 inches tall. A male has to stand 6 feet 2 inches tall. If you are shorter than that then you are tough out of luck. These applicants need to be below 21 years of age and preparing for their first year in college. His or her local TCI Club must also sponsor each applicant. Believe it or not this is no tall tale and many may consider these to be stupid, or smart scholarships depending on who you ask.

Some people may think it silly that this next scholarship could even exist. The Gertrude J. Deppen Scholarship at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania is asking for a miracle in this day and age. Those interested must have resided in Mount Carmel for at least a decade. They must also hold a diploma from Mount Carmel High School. It gets better. Prospective applicants cannot drink, smoke, use drugs or even play in sports. It must be hard to verify this award and then stick to it. This scholarship may be stupid, silly, goofy & wacky all rolled in one and other ways as well.

Yes, some of these seem like pretty silly scholarships but sometimes when you need money for college you have to be willing to find assistance where you can. The American Nuclear Society (ANS) plays an important role in helping students complete their post-high school education and prepare for careers in nuclear science and technology (NS&T). Among the programs available is the long list of ANS Scholarships for those looking for funding opportunities.

More than 20 scholarships named after pioneers and leaders in NS&T and other general scholarships are awarded each year to students with outstanding academic credentials. Special scholarships are available to students who have significant economical needs in order to pursue degrees in NS&T. In addition to the scholarships for students entering their sophomore year and higher in college, ANS also provides scholarships to incoming freshmen.

Since it was established in 1954, ANS's core purpose is to promote the awareness and understanding of NS&T. What better way than to support the development and education of those who will research and implement the future applications of nuclear science and technology.

Scholarship recipients receive their award checks in late August. Each check is made payable to the recipient and mailed to the Department Head at the University the student is attending. The student should contact the Department Head to arrange to pick up his/her award. The ANS Outreach Department may be contacted for information about the Scholarship process.

U.S. and non-U.S. applicants must be ANS student members enrolled in and attending an accredited institution in the United States. Academic accomplishments must be confirmed by transcript. All scholarships (except the Landis Scholarships and the Delayed Education Scholarship for Women) can be applied for on one form. (A separate form must be completed for the other two scholarships.) Deadline for all entries is February 1, or April 1 for the Incoming Freshman Scholarship. A list of monetary awards is available.

ANS Incoming Freshman Scholarship

Application Deadline: April 1

ANS Incoming Freshman Scholarships are awarded to graduating high-school seniors who have enrolled, full-time, in college courses and are pursuing a degree in nuclear engineering or have the intent to pursue a degree in nuclear engineering. ANS will give a maximum of four Incoming Freshman Scholarships annually. Each award is $1000.

The Scholarships will be awarded based on an applicant's high school academic achievement, freshman college courses enrolled in, quality and content of 500-word essay, letters of recommendation by counselors and/or teachers, and other information.

To apply for the ANS Incoming Freshman Scholarship, complete the special application form and return it with appropriate documents to ANS headquarters by April 1. Recipients will be notified by April 30. The scholarship award will be sent in September to the recipient upon verification (a copy of the paid fee receipt) of enrollment in an accredited university or college.

ANS Undergraduate Scholarships

Undergraduate scholarships will be awarded as follows: a maximum of four scholarships for students who have completed one year in a course of study leading to a degree in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, or a nuclear-related field and who will be sophomores in the upcoming academic year; and a maximum of 21 scholarships for students who have completed two or more years and will be entering as juniors or seniors.

ANS also awards the following individual undergraduate scholarships for students who have completed two or more years in a course of study leading to a degree in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, or a nuclear-related field.

Vogt Radiochemistry Scholarship - for an undergraduate or one graduate student enrolled in or proposing to undertake research in radio-analytical chemistry or analytical chemistry or analytical applications of nuclear science. Two Pittsburgh Local Section Scholarships - one for a graduate student (studying nuclear science and technology) and one for an undergraduate student (studying nuclear science and technology) who either have some affiliation with Western Pennsylvania or who attend school at a nearby university within the region. Applicants must check the Pittsburgh Local Section box on the scholarship form.

ANS Graduate Scholarships

A maximum of twenty-nine graduate scholarships are available for full-time graduate students in a program leading to an advanced degree in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, or a nuclear-related field. ANS also awards the following individual graduate scholarships:

John and Muriel Landis Scholarships

Administered by the ANS NEED Committee, a maximum of eight scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students who have greater than average financial need. Consideration is given to conditions or experiences that render the student disadvantaged (poor high school/undergraduate preparation, etc.) Applicants should be planning a career in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, or a nuclear-related field and be enrolled or planning to enroll in a college or university located in the United States, but need not be U.S. citizens. (Qualified high school seniors are eligible to apply for this scholarship.)

Delayed Education Scholarship for Women

One scholarship is awarded to a mature woman whose undergraduate studies in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, or a nuclear-related field have been delayed. Applicants must check the appropriate box on the Landis Scholarship form.
